Manuscripts don't Burn

The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, born in Ukraine, is a cult novel of 20th century – at once a political farce, a great romance, a retelling of Faust, a macabre burlesque and, most importantly, commentary on surviving as an artist during totalitarian regime. Celebrating her beloved novel, Inna Faliks’s Master and Margarita program and ongoing project began with commissions by the Wende Museum of the Cold War, asking composers to respond to passages of the novel in musical form. Including the 7-movement Master and Margarita Suite by Krausas.

#What2020SoundsLike album

2020 was a year with unprecedented emotional, mental, physical, and sociological effects. HOCKET tried to figure out how to make music together, make sense of what’s happening in the world right now, and provide an artistic and musical outlet for our community to express themselves.

#What2020SoundsLike is a project of miniature commissions with a quick turnaround time. There has been so much to process this year on a day-to-day basis so they wanted to create a platform for composers to voice their responses. ArtofVirus

The idea for this work came when bassoonist Anthony Parnther said he would play the piece I would write for the ArtOfVirus project.

The ArtOfVirus is an initiative by Modern Art orchestra using music to model the spread of a pandemic, the mutation of a virus, its latency, disappearance, and re-appearance, in other words behavior. Unfortunately, these questions became part of our everyday lives for the past weeks and months during 2020. AOV is a grade-scale virtual work of art created by Kornél Fekete-Kovács.

Kornél created a melody consisting of nine notes, which can be considered the strain of the virus. This melody lacks rhythm, tonality, harmony or any other context so it is easily adapted to different musical trends and styles of different artists. As a first step, he sent the virus motif to ten composers, who created the first mutations of the body, thus the first ten branches of the spread of the virus. Each sent their nine-note virus to another two composers and so it began. I received my nine notes from Barbara Croall [B Eb B Bb E C F# F D] with the first four notes based on the call of the mourning dove. I had the image of a tree, hearing the call of the mourning dove, deciding to sing back!

My parent is #1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Barbara Croall (Odawa) Pipigwan descended from Peter Eötvös (Hungary) #1.

Another World at the Villa Aurora

Pianist Genevieve Lee joins members of Brightwork Ensemble to present an evening of music from another place and time. In Saariaho’s enigmatic Mirrors, performers are given a series of musical fragments, to be assembled as desired, breaking down the need for a goal-oriented order. Veronika Krausas’ Un-Intermezzi are inspired by China Miéville’s Un-Lun Dun, a haunting story of an alternate and parallel universe. George Crumb’s masterpiece Vox Balaenae (Voice of the Whale), for three masked players bathed in blue light, takes the audience on a captivating, mysterious, and timeless journey. Altromondo (Another World), by Kurt Rhode, calls for melodicas, harmonicas, Chinese paper accordions, triangles, and antique cymbals, in addition to a number of preparations inside the piano. We are transported to a place where time is not an arrow – locations are in flux, and the music as “object” never stands still.

Detroit Symphony Orchestra Commission ANNOUNCED

Veronika Krausas wins tenth annual Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award for Female Composers Wednesday, June 26, 2019

DSO competition is only one of its type among major orchestras

Detroit, (June 26, 2019) – The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) today announced the winner of the tenth annual Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award for Female Composers: Los Angeles-based Australian-Canadian composer Veronika Krausas.

The Lebenbom Award includes the commission by the DSO of a new orchestral piece to be premiered by the orchestra in an upcoming season, a $10,000 cash prize, and a one-month residency at the Ucross Foundation, an artist’s retreat in northern Wyoming.

“I’m excited to receive the award; being familiar with many of the women who have won in the past, I’m honored to be included in the group,” says Krausas. “I’ve been wanting to write a new symphony piece—orchestras offer such a large palate of instrumental colors to work with. I’m looking forward to visiting Detroit to explore the city and see if my experiences there will inform the composition.”

Krausas has composed works for orchestra, chamber groups, soloists, player pianos, and other configurations, as well as operas and multimedia pieces that blend music with dance, acrobatics, and video. She currently serves on the faculty of the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California.

The Elaine Lebenbom Memorial Award, launched in 2006, is the only annual orchestra-sponsored award granted annually to a living female composer of any age or nationality. Krausas was chosen by a jury of DSO musicians and members of the Detroit music community.

Defenestration

In a bit of musical time-travel, SFCA collaborates with 2016 SFCA+1 guest artist Galax Quartet to present a radical, diverse, and engaging program of contemporary and Baroque music featuring new-old pairings of works. Six world premieres, by Ted Allen, Veronika Krausas, Robinson McClellan, Roy Whelden, and SFCA’s two resident composers—John Kelley and Shawn Crouch—are framed by masterworks of the chamber choir repertoire. Together SFCA and Galax Quartet—two violins, ‘cello and viola da gamba—explore the realm where early music and Baroque instruments intersect with new music and living composers. Krausas uses text by André Alexis written for Brian Goggin's Defenestration Art work in San Francisco.

Hopscotch - a mobile opera

Imagine getting in a car without knowing the destination. Sharing the car are singers, actors, and instrumentalists who draw you into a story. The car stops at an incredible site, where another chapter of the story commences – until another car pulls up, with different artists, depicting another chapter of the story. And so on, and so on, in a 90-minute journey throughout the unsuspecting city. This was Hopscotch, The Industry’s original opera, that took audiences on a dazzling and disorienting ride through the streets of Los Angeles in 24 different car journeys.

performance shot by Martin Chalifour

In French sillage literally means wake or trail. In perfumery it's the degree to which a perfume's fragrance lingers in the air when worn. When I first heard the term I knew I would use it for the title of a piece. Then David Moore asked me to write a work for double bass quartet and I started with that as the title. To combine two seemingly disparate ideas - large double basses and the delicate waft of a scent - I asked Canadian writer André Alexis to write a poem that did just that. His poem was the poetic inspiration for this work for the four amazing bassists of the LA Phil: David Moore, Christopher Hanulik, Oscar Meza and Peter Rofé.

Sillages

A roar wafts into the land rumbling something floral.

Under last year's straw the civet comes to life

While plows with fragrant wrists stutter and dig the crumbling fields.

Lumbering beasts with delicate minds, They leave quartz and citrus, almonds and rust.

Language of the Birds for Choir & String Quartet

Language of the Birds for Choir & String QuartetThe San Francisco Choral Artists and the renowned Alexander String Quartet, two of the Bay Area's beloved and wide-ranging chamber ensembles, come together for the first time in a landmark program of new compositions for chamber choir and string quartet. Together, they explore the rich sonic and emotional palette of this unusual musical configuration in rarely performed classics and new works by important contemporary composers. Major new commissioned works by North American Composers Paul Seiko Chihara, Michael Gandolfi, and Veronika Krausas are paired with the romantic outpourings of Brahms Quartets Opus 92 in a lush new transcription for choir and string quartet and Beethoven's tender Elegischer Gesang. A "Meet the Composers panel" 45 minutes before each concert offers the audience insight into the creative processes behind the three major new works. The artistic director is the fabulous conductor Magen Solomon.
